Symphony Of Distraction is back from a 5 year hiatus with their 2nd full length album, "Horse". Founded by previous members of SecondShot, Symphony of Distraction continues to keep their songwriting focused on fast melodic punk rock.
Steve, guitarist and singer of the band, recently sat down with Screaming Fastcore and talked about band's history, side projects, work with music labels and many more...
Nerd question to start. Apart from SecondShot, Allergic To Idiots, Van Hammersly and Calling Morocco, do you have or did you have more side projects?
Haha! I see you’ve done your homework! Pat’s in an awesome band called Murderland and also in the The All Brights. Jimmy was in a band with Kyle from SecondShot called Fighting Words and Kyle is currently in Gibberish. Jay and I have pretty much just stuck to SOD since we started it.
Are you Megadeth fans? How did band's name come about?
We’re not so much Megadeth fans as we are fans of that mid to late 80s golden age of metal. When we were recording our first EP, Pudwack, we got on this kick of metal puns from that era. We were thought we were hilarious. Turns out we were just drinking too much. We’ve regretted that name since the day we picked it.
How is the song writing process for you guys? Music or lyrics, which one goes first?
We’ve always been melody guys, first and foremost so music almost always comes first. Once in a while, we might have a lyric or two that we jot down and use later but yeah, music for sure.
Any plans for a SecondShot reunion show?
Not at this point. We’ve brought it up from time to time but I doubt it will ever happen. We’ve talked about throwing in a few SecondShot songs to the set if/when SOD tours again though. Who knows?
How was your experience working with Japanese label, InYa Face Records? Will your new album "Horse" have a Japanese edition too?
InYa Face were great and we would have stayed with them until the end of the band if they were still around. They had really good people working there who we got along with well and were usually on the same page about everything. Horse will be distributed in Japan through Torch Of Hope Records.
How did you sign to Less Talk More Records?
We recorded Horse knowing that we had no label to put it out since InYa Face called it a day. When it was done, our friend Seb from Less Talk contacted us about maybe putting out and they were all super cool people that were into our band and the record so we went with them. Simple as that.
What do you think about your album "Call It Off, John" being sold for $572.37 US on Discogs? https://www.discogs.com/es/sell/item/604118501
First off, it’s absolutely ridiculous to ask that much for any CD, let alone one of ours. I just don’t get people sometimes. That person’s a dick and it makes me glad that no one will ever buy it. You can just download the songs for pretty cheap because the music’s more important than the physical object that it’s on. You might as well ask a million dollars for it, you idiot.
How was touring Japan in 2012?
Touring Japan was absolutely amazing. Everyone was so great to us there and we played with so many awesome bands. Definitely one of the best experiences of my entire life and definitely a highlight for the band. And you can drink in the streets! Bonus!
What do you think of the skatepunk scene nowadays and old school bands releasing new albums this year? Is it making a comeback?
I think it’s great that old school skatepunk bands are putting out new records. As long as the music’s good, the scene definitely benefits from those bands releasing new stuff. As far as it making a comeback, I think it is. Bands seemed to go through that phase where they slowed down or just stopped making music but now the demand is back for just straight kick ass, fast music. Which obviously works out for us.
